Finding Balance in Life: Why It’s Really About Momentum

A few weeks ago, I received a message from someone who was struggling with what so many of us face today—balancing life. He was a busy professional, caught up in the whirlwind of deadlines, meetings, and personal responsibilities. His question was simple: “How can I balance my life?”

At first, I thought about giving him the usual advice—set boundaries, prioritize your tasks, take breaks, and all the usual tips we hear about work-life balance. But something about his question made me pause. After some reflection, I realized: balance isn’t the right question. In fact, the balance might be a bit misleading.

Balance Isn’t Static

Think about the word “balance.” It gives us the image of standing still, of trying to keep things in place without tipping over. But life doesn’t work that way, does it? Life is always moving, shifting, evolving. So instead of thinking about balance, what if we shifted our perspective?

I replied to him and said, “Balance isn’t about standing still—it’s about momentum.”

Life is Like Riding a Bicycle

Let me explain with an analogy: life is like riding a bicycle. When you’re on a bike, the only way to find balance is to keep pedaling. The more you pedal, the more stable you become. But here’s the key—you don’t focus on the pedals. You focus on where you’re going.

If you spend all your time staring at your feet or worrying about keeping the bike upright, you’ll likely stumble. But when you lift your gaze, focus on the path ahead, and just keep pedaling, that’s when you find your rhythm. You don’t achieve balance by standing still; you achieve it by moving forward with purpose.

Momentum Over Balance

That’s what momentum is all about. It’s not about perfectly balancing work, family, personal time, and everything else. It’s about moving forward in a way that feels right for you, adjusting as you go, and staying focused on where you’re heading.

When I explained this to him, it felt like a light bulb moment. He didn’t need to micromanage every aspect of his life to achieve “balance.” Instead, he needed to focus on gaining momentum—taking consistent, purposeful actions that would move him forward in life and, in the process, create the sense of balance he was searching for.

Keep Your Focus on the Bigger Picture

The truth is, we often get caught up in the details—worrying about managing every single task, balancing every responsibility, and checking every box. But just like on a bicycle, when we focus too much on the small things, we lose sight of the bigger picture.

What’s most important is where you’re going, not how perfect each pedal stroke is. As long as you keep moving, you’ll find your rhythm. You’ll make adjustments along the way, sometimes speeding up, sometimes slowing down, but always moving forward.

What You Can Do

So, if you’ve been asking yourself, “How can I balance my life?” I’d encourage you to reframe the question. Ask yourself instead, “How can I build momentum in my life?” Focus on what’s ahead of you. What are your goals? What do you want to achieve? Then, take consistent steps toward those things.

Momentum doesn’t require perfection. It just requires movement. Keep pedaling, keep moving, and before you know it, you’ll find that elusive “balance” you were searching for—not because you stood still and controlled everything, but because you kept your eyes on where you were going.
